The Kenyan flag has three colors: black, red and green. Each of these colors have different meanings. Black symbolizes the skin color of the people of Kenya. Red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the colonial times fighting for independence. Lastly, green symbolizes the green vegetation, which is our main focus with this program. According to recent statistics reported in The Standard in Kenya, a few years ago Kenya’s forests covered over 10% of the land, currently only 1% of forest is left. The government and the people of Kenya are working together to help solve this problem of deforestation and we would like to be part of the solution too.
During summer 2010, Moses and two other students from Hope 4 Africa @ Iowa State went on a trip to Kenya to witness the completion of the Books 4 Hope program. Through all the funds that we raised for the Books 4 Hope program we were able to buy a total of 1774 textbooks and library books for our four partners schools. Trees 4 Hope is a partnership between Hope 4 Africa and our four schools, where, as a way of offsetting the carbon footprint left by Books 4 Hope, we would plant trees at the schools. To minimize costs of buying the trees, we decided to employ one of the local ladies in the community to run and maintain a tree nursery from scratch. Anna is well known in the local community for her great work in this area and after many recommendations by the local people we knew she was the right person for the job. With Anna’s help, Trees 4 Hope was completed in May 2011, resulting in the planting over 1,300 trees!
– Stipend for Anna’s work = $300
May 2011: Program completed
